MONKEY RIVER

A boat ride up river into the rainforest takes you to see crocodiles, iguanas, turtles, and many species of birds. Your licensed tour guide will lead you into the rainforest in search of howler monkeys and to show and explain the Flora and Fauna of the rainforest and maybe even show you some of the rainforest medicines.

COCKSCOMB BASIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

This sanctuary has the highest concentration of big cats in the world. The 98,000 acre jaguar reserve is also home to jaguarundis, pumas, ocelots and margays.

In addition there are agoutis, anteaters, armadillos, tapirs, brocket deer, coatis, kinkajous, otters, pacas, peccaries and a lot of beautiful birds to be seen.

There are several hiking paths ranging from easy to strenuous to explore and even a beautiful waterfall along the way.

NIM LI PUNIT, LUBAANTUN AND BIG CREEK CAVE

You can visit all these Mayan ruins and big creek cave in just one day. They are smaller than the ones in Cayo but are close to Placencia.

The Big Creek Cave Nature Preserve has a hike that is less than 1 mile where you can enjoy the rainforest, caves and the cool waters of the creek itself.

XUNANTUNICH AND THE INLAND BLUE HOLE

Xunantunich is a Mayan ruin near the border with Guatamala. You cross the Mopan river on a hand cranked one at a time vehicle ferry to reach Xunantunich. The view from the top of the El Castillo Pyramid is spectacular overlooking the Cayo District and Peten Guatamala.
